“Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.” Haggai 1:10
“If we are honest, we have to admit it: we make time for what we want to make time for.” Lysa Terkeurst
I don’t know about you, but I haven’t spent a whole lot of time in the book of Haggai….
An interesting story in the Haggai about people taking care of the temple. Before the Holy Spirit was given to us and our bodies became temples, the Spirit of God dwelt in structures like a tent-like sanctuary called the tabernacle and the original temple was built by King Solomon in Jerusalem.
During the time of the prophet Haggai, God’s people had returned from being in exile in Babylon. One of the first things they set about to do was rebuilding the temple. They started with great enthusiasm and wonderful intentions, but slowly slipped back into complacency and eventually stopped their work on the temple altogether. Other things seemed higher priorities — more urgent, more appealing.
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’ “ Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD. (Haggai 1:2 – 8)
God was greatly burdened that the people were so carefree with this sacred place.
Don’t you imagine he is just as burdened when we don’t care for these amazing bodies that house the Holy Spirit today?
Don’t we start off with great enthusiasm with Week 1 of our journey…and slowly slip back a little if we don’t see results right away? We tend to do the same thing and “think” other things have higher priority.
How quickly we set aside our own health for the business of life! Raising kids, work, paying bills, just day-to-day activities. But the truth is just like Lysa said. We make time for what’s important to us.
Prayer for the day: Dear Lord, I want to care for my body in the ways I eat and in the ways I move. Help me to see the ability to exercise as a gift. I dedicate my temple to You and commit to start rebuilding it today. In Jesus’ name. Amen – Made to Crave Prayer
