For the most part my boys are not a fan of the school cafeteria and that is just alright by me! It helps me know they are getting proper nutrition everyday too. It does take a little effort on are part each morning…but I know I am feeding them clean healthier food and it is worth it. I get asked a lot what I pack in their lunches…so here we go!
So, here are some of my tips for packing healthy, filling lunches for school age children:
Invest in a good storage/cooler system.
A lot of the foods I send for the boys need to be kept cool for a few hours, so having a good insulated lunch bag with an adequate cooler is important. We got ours from Academy this year, but there are tons of cute functional lunch bags out there. Here are some of my favorites:
My boys use the Igloo Lunch Kit from Academy. We have used this one 2 years in a row. It is big enough for their lunch, cooler pack and their water and has several handles to choose how you carry it!

Keep it Fresh
We all know there is no telling what that lunch box touches at school throughout the day! Make sure your work surface and the lunch bag are cleaned every day with soap and warm water.
So, try to prepare as much the night before as I can.
Bag veggies or fruit, fill containers with ranch or humms, set apart lunch meat or cheese that will be pack and have it all in one place in the refrigerator so I can just grab it in the morning and go.

Include a Veggie
The boys favorites are cucumbers, carrots, and celery.
For the cucumbers and carrots one of my boys like hummus with it.
For the celery we add natural Peanut Butter with a few raisins on it!
We like the Laura Scudder’s Smooth Natural peanut butter.
The apple and the orange to not get squished and are easy for me to pack.
The grapes are sweeter and seem like a treat to them.
Mostly, I stick with organic and low processed sugars, but there are days they get candy or something we don’t normally eat. These are our favorites!
My youngest even likes Kind Bars!
My boys do want to have a “chip” option
For a Healthier “Chip” option we choose Skinny Pop or these Simply Cheetos.
Both have no preservatives or chemicals.
Use these Thermos to keep their food warm.
There are great soup containers available that will keep food warm for hours. As we get into Fall, I am definitely going to take advantage of sending leftovers!
Add Water as their drink
|You can get it at Walmart or Amazon|
The boys get 2 waters everyday. One to keep with them at school during the day and the other is for their lunch. Here are the Thermos’ we use to keep the water cold for them.
You can even get them in matching sets for your smaller children!
We had these cute ones for SO long, but now the boys are older and want the plain ones! They grow up so fast!
